Katrina Matthews

Katrina Matthews leads an extremely busy double life, being a Physiotherapist Officer in the British Army and a professional triathlete.

So far it is a balance she has managed to deal with extremely well as she continues her triathlon progression since taking up the sport very recently in 2015 and only racing professionally since June 2019.

She started at grassroots level over sprint distances, but has now reached the level where a trip to Kona for the World Championship is very much an immediate goal.

Her very first middle-distance race was IRONMAN Calgary 70.3 (an age-group race only) in 2018, and she quickly announced herself on the big stage by coming home in front. She also became English National Champion at the Vitruvian Triathlon.

If 2018 had been promising, 2019 only served to emphasise Katrina’s huge potential as, with only four months of full-time training behind her, she achieved a string of excellent results.

She claimed four middle-distance podiums, won the ETU Middle Distance Championship and also finished a very creditable 16th at the 70.3 World Championship in Nice.

To top the year off Matthews put in a super display on her first attempt at the full distance professionally, claiming fourth place at IRONMAN Western Australia.

As a deserved reward for her continued improvement and undoubted potential, Katrina was added to the BMC-Vifit Pro Triathlon Team for the 2020 season.

As sport began to come out of the COVID-19 lockdown she added another victory to her CV in August 2020 - in the RTTC National 100-mile Time Trial Championship.

She then notched her first victory as a professional at IRONMAN 70.3 Tallinn in September 2020 to qualify for the 70.3 World Championship.

Katrina is brimming with ambition and saw the move to BMC-Vifit as ideal as she maps out her future.

“I see joining the BMC-Vifit Pro Triathlon Team as an incredible opportunity to learn, improve and perform to my best,” she said.

“My first season as a PRO went better than I could have expected and so I am setting the goalposts even higher than I thought possible for next year.”
