Steven McKenna has been a regular on CHALLENGE event podiums since he entered his first triathlon back in 2015.
The four-time South Australian Triathlete of the Year was introduced to the sport that year after breaking his leg playing Australian Rules Football.
Formerly competing in national athletics, Steven enjoyed swimming and cycling so much during his rehabilitation from the injury that he set his heart on competing in triathlon.
His success in the sport has continued into 2021, with a victory at Hell of the West and a commendable fourth-place finish at the PTO-supported Big Husky Triathlon.
Steven was in contention for the win heading into the final leg at Big Husky and was on the tail of then leader Caleb Noble just over halfway through the 21.1km run.
He slipped back slightly however as fatigue set in over the remainder of the leg, eventually finishing just under two minutes off the podium places.
“I took a big risk running to the lead with Caleb Noble at 10km into the run,” Steven wrote on social media after the race.
“Risk didn’t pay off and I blew up sliding back to 4th.”
“Still proud of 4th and holding on despite the legs screaming at me!”
Steven will have plentiful opportunity to return to the podium throughout this year as he competes in a series of IRONMAN events, at Geelong, Cairns and Australia.
