Ben was new to the Professional triathlon ranks in 2023, moving up from the age group ranks after a series of wins and podium finishes.
Ben first started doing triathlons at secondary school and was inspired by the late Rodney Gordon at Auckland Grammar School. That’s why Ben’s tri suit features “Race 4 Rodney” in memory of Rodney and his initial encouragement.
Ben turned his focus to road cycling at school and went on to represent New Zealand at the u19, u23, and elite levels. His older brother inspired him to return to triathlon, and he used his cycling strength to finish 2nd in his first Ironman 70.3 at Taupo in March 2021 (despite never having run more than 20km before).
Ben swims at Swimtastic with Mark Bone’s squad, which includes Cameron Brown. He runs with The Whippets Running Project and was part of the team which won the New Zealand road relay champs in 2023. Ben also rode the Tour of Southland in 2023 with the Couplands-Booths Logistics team, finishing in the top half of the field after being a strong team domestique for the week.
Ben is passionate about helping others in their sporting endeavours. He coaches a number of top-performing secondary school triathletes and cyclists and enjoys sharing the learnings from his own experiences to help with their development.
Ben plans to build on his 2023 progress in 2024, starting with Ironman New Zealand in Taupo in March. He qualified in Langkawi for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Taupo in December 2024, and doing well on his home course is another key target for 2024.
