Emilio Aguayo Munoz
Spaniard Emilio Aguayo Munoz is a former National Triathlon Champion, and has improved year on year since turning professional in 2013.
His first victories came during the 2015 season when he won the Champion of Spain middle distance Triathlon, and also became Valencia Champion in the national triathlon of Fuenteálamo.
Further success followed in 2017, with a victory at the Valencia 113 Middle-Distance as well as five other podiums across the year. Emilio then won the Volcano Triathlon in Lanzarote in both 2018 and 2019 - his favourite event on the annual calendar.
‘Bisonte’ won a further four events during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, his greatest triumph coming at IRONMAN Wisconsin in 2019 and in the process earning him a place at the 2020 World Championship in Kona. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic scuppered his Hawaii aspirations for now.
Emilio took up triathlon by following in his father's footsteps as his dad was a triathlete and recommended the sport to his son. ‘Bisonte’ was initially a swimmer but got bored of only training in the pool, and like his dad took up the multi-discipline sport.
Away from the course, Emilio boasts that he can eat five times the food a normal person can. The thing he is most proud of in life meanwhile, outside of eating, is his little baby Balú.
Emilio describes Jan Frodeno as both his biggest hero and his biggest rival, while his biggest fear is finishing a triathlon swim and realising his bike is not in the first transition zone. His most embarrassing moment to date involves him turning up to a race with a broken bike after it was damaged at the airport.
The most painful experience of his triathlon career was when he tore both his hamstrings during an event and still somehow completed the race. His advice for training is “less is more”.
