Mareen Hufe
Mareen Hufe has been a podium regular since her professional debut in 2012, a year after she won the 2011 IRONMAN World Championship in the 30-34 age group in Hawaii as an amateur. Not surprisingly Kona remains her favourite race.
Mareen’s first professional victory came in 2013 at the Aasee Triathlon Bocholt before she won a total of 26 more events over the next five years, including three more victories (2016-2018) at Aasee.
During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Mareen excelled, winning three Olympic-distance and eight half-distance triathlons in addition to two IRONMAN victories in Austria and Malaysia.
In all she has collected more than 10 full-distance podiums during her career, including four consecutive second-place finishes in Western Australia between 2013 and 2016.
She is also one of the lucky few triathletes able to compete during the 2020 season despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, winning the Leipzig Triathlon in July 2020.
A horse rider in her youth, Mareen was unable to commit the required time to the sport and switched to running. Her decision to become a triathlete came after a friend gave her a book about the sport, and with it came a new goal - to complete an IRONMAN. It turned out to be a pretty good decision.
Until she turned professional, Mareen was working as a full-time sales controller at BYK-Chemie, but reduced her hours to concentrate on her triathlon career. Her favourite training location is her hometown of Wesel in Germany and her favourite sport away from triathlon is Tennis.
Mareen can’t live without coffee while her favourite cheat meal is steak and she is driven by her love for the sport. Her most painful experience to date was suffering dehydration during a race at the World Championship in Hawaii.
