Having developed from being a competitive university swimmer into an IRONMAN triathlete, Kinsey Laine is now following the same sporting path in her coaching career.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate had two spells as their assistant swim coach - from 2010 to 2011 and then 2014-2017 - before moving to Oregon and becoming Bend Swim Club’s coach.
While coaching there between April 2018 and April 2019, Kinsey joined The Endurance Collaborative as triathlon coach in January 2018 and she has been there ever since.
Kinsey was originally from Silver Lake in Washington state, but moved to Alaska in 2007 to read economics at Fairbanks University and swam there for four years.
In her final year she competed for the university at cross-country, so triathlon was a natural progression.
Kinsey proved an immediate success in her new sport while she was based in Alaska, winning the Gold Nugget Triathlon in Anchorage for three years in a row between 2015 and 2017.
In 2016 she recorded her first triathlon victory outside Alaska when she won the Olympic-distance Lavaman Triathlon in Hawaii. She also made her 70.3 IRONMAN debut in Mooloolaba in Australia, where she placed sixth in her 25-29 age group.
A first attempt at the full distance followed in 2017 in Canada and she did even better there, finishing runner-up in her age group. She also took on the Big Island, finishing 18th in the 25-29 bracket at the World Championship.
2017 was also the year of her 70.3 World Championship bow and she finished 18th in her age group in Chattanooga in the USA.
Kinsey’s 70.3 performances moved onto a new level in 2018 as she turned professional, with a series of top-10 finishes in Victoria (Canada), Santa Rosa (California), Santa Cruz (California), Xiamen (China) and Indian Wells La Quinta (California). Indian Wells produced her best placing of fourth.
Having achieved such consistency over the 70.3 distance in 2018, her hard work paid off big time in 2019 with her first win, in X’ian in China. She had earlier finished second in Peru and would also go on to take part in the World Championship in Nice, finishing 25th.
