Jamie Bedwell
Visit ProfileJamie was born, grew up, and still lives in the county of East Sussex, southeast England. His initial love of sport was born out of watching Jonny Wilkinson drop-kicking to win the 2003 world cup. Jamie went on to play competitive rugby from the age of 5 to 15. He hoped to become a rugby player for England and trained with the London Wasps and Harlequins squads as a young teenager. However, his slim build and lack of development become his downfall, and a school assembly at the age of 13 by a local triathlon organiser is what turned Jamie's interest to a sport he had never previously heard of. Unable to swim anything but head-up breaststroke Jamie took on his local kids' triathlon in Uckfield, he swam two too many lengths, fell off his bike, and ran averagely to finish. But he loved it! As rugby became more and more difficult for Jamie to physically compete in he focused more on triathlon and had to make a decision between the two sports when the dates of his training for the two sports clashed. His decision was simple, instead of becoming a professional rugby player for his country he would become a professional triathlete instead. A friend of Jamie's family recommended a triathlon club in Eastbourne, Team Bodyworks, the club where Jamie would go on to meet his wife Abi where they both still train today. Jamie's progression in triathlon however was not smooth. Unable to swim freestyle efficiently or even tumble turn it was the swim that was Jamie's downfall in his years spent competing as a junior in the British triathlon super series. However, Jamie continued to commit his life to his aspiring dream of competing professionally, choosing to study Podiatry at university in Eastbourne so he could remain training with Team Bodyworks but his aspirations took a major blow at 18 when Jamie was hit by a car whilst out running. The car, which was traveling at speeds of 40-60mph, hit Jamie from behind. Jamie was left unconscious and was rushed to hospital where doctors revealed he has fractures in his spine, a small tear in his kidney, and severe burns to his calf and feet. But Jamie credits God for protecting him during this accident, a faith which Jamie had always had but took more seriously shortly before being hit by the car. Jamie continued to compete in short-distance triathlon whilst attending university a time in which he also married his long-term girlfriend Abi Bedwell, and gained his qualification as a Podiatrist. Jamie's long-course career only came about as a result of continuing to struggle in shorter-distance races and recognising his strength in endurance. Jamie's first long-distance race was completed in October 2021 at IM 70.3 West-Friesland and Jamie went on to earn his profesional racing license at Outlaw Half Nottingham in May 2023 on the same day as his wife also earned her profesional card. Jamie lives with his wife and parents and brother and sister-in-law in the heart of the South Downs close to Eastbourne and works with his mother in their podiatry clinic at his parents' house in Uckfield.
